*      Competition Enterprise was conceived by Philip Wills in 1974 and run by John Fielden up to his death in 2002

*      It continues to be held every year at a variety of gliding sites around the UK

*      Our prime aim is to maximise the day, read Justin’s “Enterprise Philosophy in 2009 & Beyond”

*      It is open to any pilot with a Silver C and tasks accommodate all types of glider – glass and wood, small and big wings, with or without engines; BGA handicapping applies

*      Competition Enterprise does not claim to be better than modern competitions, just different

The Philip Wills National Enterprise Trophy

Awarded annually by the Enterprise Club to the pilot/s to have achieved the most enterprising flight launching from anywhere in the UK.

·        Due to its loss we are seeking a design for a new trophy

·        We are seeking nominations for those years where we are “missing” a claim

·        Please submit your claim for 2009

Enterprise Club – appointments & membership

Read Justin’s “Enterprise Philosophy in 2009 & beyond”

1.      At this year’s competition we made some new appointments:

President – Justin Wills

Justin fully supported his father’s ideals from day one by entering and winning(!) the first 3 competitions. He won again this year, making a total of 11, with one flight of 837kms. He has demonstrated enterprise flying throughout his career and all over the world, as well as being a very successful competition pilot at national and international levels with awards too numerous to list. This year we elected him to the position of President in recognition of all this, his constant support to Competition Enterprise and as an advocate of all its ideals.

Vice President – Bill Longstaff

Bill also started in 1974, missed one or two years, then has flown every year from 1980, joining the committee in 1981 becoming chairman in 2000 to 2008. Following John Fielden’s death in 2002 he has been very active behind the scenes in every subsequent competition specialising in scoring, logger traces and photographs. He was also instrumental in establishing our web-site.  It seemed totally appropriate that he should be elected Vice President.

2.      And clarified our structure:

Enterprise Club – automatic membership

Anyone can fly at Enterprise and it was agreed that first-timers be called Associate Members. But recognising the growing number of regular attendees, membership of the Enterprise Club is now automatic, determined by flying at least twice and at more than one gliding club in a 5 year period. This year alone 8 entrants found themselves club members! And 5 more non-attendees also qualify. See Club Members
